I've seen many strategies and while they are all effective, they all FAIL MISERABLY when you got 5 players using their own strategy and not working together.
This is the strategy I prefer, and when everyone works as a team and does their exact part, it never fails. Picard once told data, its possible to make no mistakes and still lose. Not true here, everytime this strategy failed, it was because someone made a mistake.
For this strategy it helps if arturia or someone witha similarly equipped vessel is present.
First step Kill all the probes going from RIGHT TO LEFT. Reason i like doing it that was is because im left handed and like the insult to ego a back handed blow to the face presents.
During this phase, 1 ship(arturia) guards the center and left sides of the Kang. The other 4 ships take up a position in front of but below the right side bay. 2 in front, because these ships will have their attention divided between killing probes and shooting down Birds of Prey. The other 2 probe groups are in back and one ship to each of those will suffice. Once a top tier probe has died, it will cause a raptor and Negh'var warship to decloak and begin firing at whoever killed the respective probe. At this point somebody has to say something about the fact, which will then require all probe killers to focus on the negh'var, while moving as little as possible, as you dont want to stray into the cubes [censored] slapping distance. once the 2 decloaks are dealt with, the other 2 final probes can be dealt with with impunity.
Once all probes at the right hand cube are down, squad leader gives the word to attack center. This cues all 4 attackers to move to center probes, and the defender ship to now ignore center bay ships infavor of the right bay. This is the time the defender will be most likely to need assistance as now they are having to cross a gap twice as wide to get from one Bird of prey squad to the next. While center cube is under attack, one of the front probe killers will have to double as defense assist if needed. Again, as with right cube, same drill. Kill the bottom probes, with front probe killers doubling as that bays BoP interceptors. once a top probe falls, kill the decloaking negh'var and raptor. Then kill remaining probes.
Once this is done, squad leader say move to left cube. Attackers move to left cube, and the strained defender can breath a sigh of relief as now their patrol pattern is now shortened. Again, same drill as right and center cubes. Kill bottom probes, 2 ships to front, doubling as bay guards, and the other 2 take a seperate probe stack in back. Kill the warships once they decloak and then kill remaining probes.
Once all probes are down, kill any remaining Bird of prey spawns. After the map is clear of spawns, everyone goes on the offensive, including the defender. Everyone attacks left cube and destroys it. After this everyone goes on the defensive. 2 people defend against the wave that comes from center bay, and 3 take the other. this is because the ones taking that wave have to fly farther, which means the spawns will get closer to the Kang, which means more firepower is needed to take them down quickly before they get in range. It might also help, because after a cube falls, different people come out of red alert at different times, if the ship helping with right wave, has repulsor beams. If the right side wave gets off a shot at the kang, activate the repulsion beams to push them out of range.
Once both launch bays raptor and bird of prey waves have fallen, everyone takes out the center cube, quickly as possible. By the way, for the cube killing phase, gravitic anchor comes in handy here as it has a -50% general defense and -25 kinetic resist. This means good news for tricobalt users ;D ;D.
Once center cube is down, this is the biggest attack wave of all, but you have the advantage of being able to bring all 5 players weapons to bear. Repulsion beams may be necessary. Also, This wave contains Negh, vars. If these will fire heavy plasmas, and thats bad news for the kang. Even though the kang has 975k health, and to lose the optional bonus, the kang has to lose 25% of that, a single heavy plasma can do that. Repulsion beams are handy here as well, because while fire at will can miss, tractors have 100% accuracy. Anyway, Repulsors will destroy heavy plasmas with 100% accuracy. Once the wave is destroyed, move on to the final cube, and drop it quickly. After that, its all smash and go from there. When this strategy is perfectly executed, ive seen the optional be achieved with 2 minutes left to spare. Throw in proper power level management, such as routing power to engines, when you need to move quick and your under red alert and thus unable to use full impulse, and in theory, we could add another 30-45 seconds to our safety margin, depending on how fast your ships can route power.
(Ahh, if only repuslison beams pushed them away instead of destroying them, because with a degree of precision you could destroy a neghvar with a game of hot space potato. Push the torp back at it, since it doesnt have to hit its target to detonate. it just has to hit SOMETHING. Belive me, ive taken myself out with a direct hit from my own tricobalt device. I launched it from full impulse, out ran it, got in front of it, and got hit in the back with it. This is why i load that thing in the BACK of my ship. that way im flying away from it when i fire it.)
