When Tanking with the anniversary edition odyssey star cruiser, its important to build your skills and your ship to suit the task. Otherwise, arturia with that retrofit defiant will draw all the aggro and make you useless. Not that she doesn't do that in the presence of the best tank builds anyway. Maybe she shoulda got the dreadnought cruiser. It'll use her same ship build and give her a lance and not only that, but she could withstand more than one plasma torpedo hit.

Anyway, I hadnt given such things much thought as I like to focus on making things explode. Suffragious once asked me what would make a good tank build. Well common sense describes a tank as a slow moving behemoth that can really take a beating, and its size alone draws all the attention. He had just used a respec token to redo all his skills, and was wondering what makes a good STO Tank build. Well, I might fly an escort now, but most of my main toon's ships are cruisers, so i told him this. You want to draw attention and also you want to be able to survive that attention.

Well Drawing attention takes precedence over surviving it, because without the ability to draw it your going to survive anyway. Thus put all your weapons related skills at max. He did inform me that he does not use torpedo's so i said, ok then max out skills that are either all encompassing for weapons and the ones that focus on beams only. After that Max out your hull boosting skills, then Max out Shield buffing skills. Engines aren't that important, although if sector space flight speed is important to you i guess you could max out driver coil, but if you spec for proper tanking, you'll max out the points your allowed for space use. Besides, thats what borg engines and slipstream drive are for.

For your special set, I've heard that where omega set is for damage dealers, the klingon honor guard and M.A.C.O sets are good buffers for defense.

After going off what i told him, i am happy to report that when suffragious did go tanking, without arturia there to draw all the aggro away with her ship build, he tanked very well, and actually survived hits that no escort ever could.

I love to tank, being able to take massive amounts of punishment and come out the other end all beams still firing is a great feeling.

Primary thing for tanks is to stay alive and to grab aggro so you take the beating as others can lay into the enemy.

Aggro is the quickest thing to talk about so I'll deal with that 1st. Basically the ONLY way to increase you're aggro over everyone else is to spec into _Threat Control_. Nothing else I'm aware of apart from raw DPS will grab an NPCs attention.
After some quick tests I found that skilling 3 of 9 points into that skill is the best balance of survival and aggro.
Any more skills points in it ( I tried 6) and NPCs will hunt you down, across the whole map if necessary and not let you go. This might sound good but as a tank there are times when you need to bail after taking too much heat to heal and let cooldowns happen on boff powers. I find 3 points in is a good amount to let you grab and hold their attention whilst you're hitting them, but stop attacking them and usually they'll get more interested in someone else for a bit, so you can control the battle a bit plus allows you to stay alive for more uptime = more dps.


Getting a good tank build for me is about balancing boff powers and having a good mix.
By that I mean not running 2 of the same power. None of this 2x EPtS business I see many escorts and things run as that causes cool downs on each other = wasted time waiting for an ability to become available which when taking punishment is an _eternity_. So I only run 1 of each of the important tanking abilities and offset them with other equivalent sci or engy abilities.

And this is is why I love the Star Cruiser/Orion Marauder/Odyssey boff layouts so much, because they lend themselves well to running one of each ability.

I.e.

Tac Team 1 (shield redistribution)
Engy Team 1 (hull heal and heal buff for A2SIF/HE), Aux to Structural 1 (heal + medium hull resistance boost), Emergency power to Shields (medium heal and big resistance + power boost)
Emergency to Aux (A2SIF/HE/TSS boost), Reverse Shield Polarity (emergency for when shields go down, chain with TT1 to auto fill all shield facings), Aceton Field 1 (enemy weapons debuff = you take less damage)
PH1 (big hull resistance buff + tractor beam removal), Hazard Emitters 1 (big hull heal over time and removes a lot of debuffs/hazards. Small hull resist buff), Transfer Shield Strength 2 (big shield heal with small resist buff).


Now running a ship with that config lets you fire off ANY of those abilities without causing a cooldown on something else important (except for HE1 and PH1 but you can be offset by using A2SIF with either to either provide the heal of the hull resist buff). There's 2 shield heal/buff abilities that don't interrupt each other, there's two hull heal abilities that don't interfere with each other, plus there's shield redistribution, hull resist buff and emergency buttons in RSP and PH1. Plus and enemy weapons debuff.

Now tanking with other ship types is possible but it start becoming a trade off. But I've found my Karfi build is quite a decent tanker too.

Having the right console arrangement is important. Typically 2x neutronium for engy, for sci either shield gen + shield emitter if you have high shield points (emitter gives better heals which is what you want over capacity in long drawn out battles) of just 2x shield gens if you have low amount of shields.

Equipped shield, engine, deflector are also important. I like the 2x2 option. borg engine and console (for hull heal proc) and 2x KHG or MACO.

In my Marauder I can tank everything is STFs including tac cube and Donatras ship (excluding thalaron burst, but I can do that too every 2nd time with the cover shield console)

borg/maco/omega/aegis/combo

first off there is a aegis set still in the fleet bank if anyone wants it. if its gone ill try and get one back in there.

I started off in stf's with my defiant and a aegis set i did alright but ended up getting oneshoted by everything so i did some research and at that time(before f2p) the current best? set was suppose to be the borg aegis combo(now that i have experience i don't agree that it was) so i built a borg/aegis combo with a tank setup. i did good considering i was out agroing even the best cruisers but i was dying atleast 5-10 times per elite. all insta torps. when i got my free oddy i started making a tank out of it. recently before joining bes i managed to come up with all the materials to craft a new aegis set. i put that on my oddy as a starting point. with it i was able to tank anything on normal with few powers(i switched back to full aegis on my defiant and immediately noticed a improvement). i was able to outlast and take agro from almost everything only problem the insta torp. if the first thing that hits me is a insta torp im dead unless i use a resist. once reactive is fully charged i can tank a tac cube on elite all day(iv been hit by 8 insta torps and still had 10% hull(over 30 seconds, with heals). a high yield torp brings me down to 50% but my automated defense turret takes care of those so i never get hit by them in any of my ships(-25% console for survivability, i average twice the lifespan with the turret).

i got myself a mk xi M.A.C.O wich is the same mark as the aegis on a VA. with the maco i can now take the first insta torp and servive but after a few minuets im fighting a loosing battle against the cooldowns especially for my resits abilities. My universal bo is a tac so i can take agro from the best of the best defiant's with out it the good defiant's die before i take a single hit. maco seems to work but at mk xi dosent seem to compare to the aegis, a mk xii might be a better set but i dont have one t test and still havent got a proto tech on my engineer.

i swapped out sets mid fight on infected with aegis set once reactive was fully charged my shields wernt draining as fast as with the maco set(first cube and spheres charged my reactive shilding in 1.5 sec). invisible torps -50% forward shilds with tac team activ and -10% hull with full reactive(with out reactive its -100% for shilds and -90% hull with tac team and the other 10% hull is gone in 3 sec with plasma fire). Maco set was -50% hull.

in my oddy i can take Donatras thalaron burst if the aegis is full or i activate my resists. if i have both active i have come out with 90% hull left. it seems thalaron blast is effected by plasma resist.

as far as the borg/aegis combo i never had any luck. a small boost to hull regen abilities in exchange for resistance to damage

maco/borg i see a posibility here but havent had a chance to try. the maco 3 set bonous isent worth it to begain with. could be better than the aegis set for stf's.

for anything other than stf's the aegis will be better especially with random enemies the aegis is the ultimate in adaptability

at the cost of the aegis it it's out of most peoples reach
1-2 mill ec per peace
